What is skin microbiome? The microbiome protects baby’s skin and serves an important role in keeping skin healthy. It is the first layer touched by external germs, UV and pollution as well as products. During the first few days and weeks of life, baby’s microbiome undergoes rapid colonisation and diversification and becomes body site-specific, meaning that the make-up of babies’ microbial communities differs across each site – for instance, baby gut microbiome differs from baby skin microbiome. |
Why is caring for the microbiome so important?
Baby skin is home to a community of billions of friendly living micro-organisms, also known as skin flora. This community is what we call the skin microbiome – the living protective layer, which defends skin from harmful organisms and environments stressors. It generates skin nutrients, improves skin barrier quality, and helps keep skin healthy and resilient.
The microbiome barrier works in conjunction with skin cells and the skin’s immune system to protect overall skin health.
Elements that have been shown to disrupt an adult’s microbiome (e.g. harsh cleansers, antimicrobials, antibiotics, pollution) have a similar or possibly greater impact on baby microbiome.
